29th-30th

Nice weekend at home, Soddy's highlight were 14 Twite on both Saturday and Sunday. The Usual Wildfowl were on the pond a Flock of 35 Pinks flew over with 1 on the pond with the hundreds of greylags.

Bullfinch's were in evidence as were plenty of Tree Sparrows, Yellow Hammers and Long-tailed Tits.

2 Barn Owls and 2 Tawny owls were nice and a Tree Creeper was a rare bird for Soddy. Lastly at Soddy it was nice to see 3 Roe deer.

Had a very Quick trip to Keswick and thought i would have a quick look in Bell Close Car park, i was VERY surprised to see 28 Waxwings feeding on the bush's. This is a really popular site for Waxwings this year. It was getting dark so i only managed this 1 record shot.

28th

RIP Cyril The Steppe Grey Shrike taken from us by a predator in the night!!!!!

24th

Back to work on the Monday and back to checking the car parks in Keswick. Id been checking them all week. Waxwings were the target, now ive been having a rough time with Waxwings as of late missing them EVERY where i go. But on this day i arrived at Bell Close Car Park and BRILLIANT 15 Waxwings feeding on yellow berries, what wounderful looking birds, these stopped about all day and 7 still the following day but then there was 1 at Soddy gap NOOOOOOO! and not seen by me damn damn damn!.

23rd

Tristan rang to say he and Chris were off to Potteric Carr in Yorkshire for a Caspian gull, did i want to go, naaa its only a Caspian ive seen loads!!!. Oh were going for the Shrike too. NOW thats diffrent coarse im coming. So i got to chris befor 7am and were at Tristans just after, we were now on our way, by 11 am we were at the Steppe/Southern Grey Shrike in Lincolnshire. I was nervous all the way down due to NO news even though someone had put an RFI out. Luckily it was still here showing really well including sitting on peoples head and scope, some unruley people had there cameras in its face, no word of a lie withing 2 cm of the bird!!!!! Felt like saying the get F*ck out of its face. Digi scoping i had to stand well back. Wounderful bird, i didnt actually think i would get the chance to see it, thanks to Chris for driving all that way. More pics in my Gallery

A big flock of Dark Bellied Brents were a bonus.

After our fill of this outstandingly showy bird we made our way to Covenham Reservoir where a Grey Phalarope had been reported, after a 15 min walk we had the bird showing well in the heavy swell.

We were running late by this time so it was back up north towards Potteric Carr where a Caspian gull had been reported for the past few days. Another long walk 20 min got us in the hide just befor dark, there were a couple of hundred Lesser Black-backed gull and only a dozen herring gulls so it wasnt long befor we found the 3rd winter Caspian gull and 2 nice Yellow legged Gulls, an adult and a 3rd winter, it was soon pitch black so we made our way in the dark back to the car and home.. A great day and every bird ticked!!!!

22nd

First time back at Soddy since the 1st, so what am i going to see today, well i got me wellies on and hunted through the wet area, when i flushed a Short-eared Owl, Brilliant!!!!. A few Snipe flew out too but little else. Feeding on the berries were 5 Male Bullfinch, there was not to much on the pond, a couple of Cormorant, Goldeneye, Pochard and usual wildfowl.

 8th and 9th

So i disowned Tristan for the weekend and took the wife to Scarbrough. (romantic break not!). On the Way dropped into Garfitts Farm near Bilsdale in North Yorkshire for a Two Barred Crossbill, this was a lifer for me. On arriving at Garfitts Farm slipping and sliding, a couple of birders said it aint been seen since 8-10 it was now 11am s*it. But as i joined the group of birders iT turned up on the feeder only feet away, but typically on the wrong side of the feeders, although i did feel very privaliged to see this bird so quickly.

When we got to Scarbrough we decided to take a look in the harbour where a Great Northern Diver was showing well, also a Merlin was dodging in between the boats.

Next stop was North of Scarbrough Castle for the reported Pallas Warbler and Yellow Browed Warbler but befor i could look i heard news of a Pied Wheatear this would be my Second Lifer. So of we went to Reighton Sands Caravan park and again this bird was so easy showing well by the caravans, although at this point it was nearly dark, it seemed like it would roost underneath one of the Static vans.

So the next day we decied to go back for another look, this time the light was much better, although too strong now (winge winge winge). Again it showed very well but was chased around a lot, also over were 5 or 6 Common Crosbill. We had  alook in the ravine but nowt!.

Another look at the diver in the harbour where i noticed a Long-tailed Duck too.

This time i managed to walk around the north side of the castle and eventually managed to see a Yellow-browed Warbler, a very Dark Chiff-Chaff but no Pallas Warbler.

It started to rain about half two so we made our way home. A great Weekend had!

2nd

Tristan and i went looking for Rarities in the North east, It was s*it!!!

First bird of the day was a Nordic Type Jackdaw in a village near Tynemouth????

Tynemouth and the leas hosted a Richards Pipit, giving lots of brief flight views, and in Hartlepool its self was a Firecreast and we missed Black Redstart! Good god Birdings difficult!!!!

1st

Well the dark nights have drawn in and im unable to do soddy as regular as i would like. So i gave Soddy gap a good grilling.
1 Water Rail calling, 80+ Fieldfare, Redwing, 6 Bullfinch over calling, Tree Sparrow's were in the usual garden, 1 female Goosander, 23 Wigeon most seen here this winter, loads of greylags with the feral Snow goose, 28 Pinkfeet dropped in with them and a Male Sparrowhawk gave brilliant views sat in the tree.

Next i tried a sea watch off Workington the highlights if you can call em that was 1 Adult Med Gull, 7 Common Scoter, lots of auks mainly Guillemots, 8 Red-throated Divers and 11 Purple sandpiper on the rocks.

In the afternoon rach and i had a quick trip to Bassenthwaite lake, I gave it a good grilling but only thing of note were 5 Pintail. I was hoping the Female Ring-necked duck i found last year had returned but there were very few Tufties to bring it in. I then noticed it was found the next day (Sunday) on Bassenthwaite bloody Typical!

26th

Had a trip to Caerlaverock with Tristan and met up with Chris baines, Searched high and low for a year tick the Green winged teal that had  been present for a few days, but after a while searching we realised it wasnt there typical... There wasnt a lot here really, chris and i went off leaving Tristan to his thoughts. Chris and i had 25 Twite, Peregrine and Sparrowhawk. We then met back up with Tristan in the Avenue tower where the day was saved as i refound the Taverners Canada goose.

18th

Couple of trips to Soddy Gap on Return from Fair Isle hosted a Barn Owl.

Cormorant.

and my first goldeneye here for the season. 1st winter bird.

FAIR ISLE HERE WE COME

Posted by meg33 at 12:02 PM on October 12, 2008 Comments comments (0)

A trip to Fair Isle had been planned for a year now and eventually the time had come to go.

So on Saturday October the 4th Rachel dropped Tristan, Derek and Myself of at Jct 44 where Mike was there to pick us up. We were having the day birding before getting the plane to Shetland the Next Day. First stop was fannyside for the Bean Geese, but our first dip oh oh!!!! Then onto Grangemouth where it was raining dipping Ring-billed gull, this isnt looking good. Next stop was Largo Bay, nothing but loads of Velvet scoters. Still better to dip things on the first Day. Next morning the wetaher was much better so we stopped off at Lunan bay where we had good but Distant views of 2 Drake Surf Scoters, also double figure Risso's Dolphin, i didnt have a clue but luckily Tristan had seen this species befor. I found 2 Med Gulls on the beach, im sick of Med gulls i wish i could find something else. 6 Whooper Swans flew around, my first of the autumn. We then got to Aberdeen where we got the Plane to Shetland. On Arrival we new a Red-throated pipit had been seen so we saw some birders and got directions. It was a cracking bird and eventually gave us stunning views a lifer for me..

On arriving at Fair Isle we dropped off our stuff and i got my second life (tarts tick) a 1st Winter Female Bluethroat.

A good day was had with my first thrush's of the season such as Redwing and Fieldfare.

Richards Pipit was a good one, with Snow Bunting, Twite, Bonxie, Whinchat, Garden and Willow Warblers, it was looking like it could be good.

The Tuesday was a god awful day it poored it down virtually all day but we had our 2nd Bluethroat of the trip, this time a 1st Winter male Bluethroat.

A Siberian Chiff Chaff was a nice surprise a possible had been seen the day before, but i got excellent views of this bird today and it looked spot on for a Sib. Abientus chiffies were also in the area. Brambling were nice with groups of 5 and 11. Song Thrush, Merlin, Peregrine, Jack Snipe, Chiff Chaff, Barnies, Pinks  and Whoopers were all nice for the day.

Wednesday was a brilliant day, i found a Yellow Browed Warbler whilst on ringing rounds in the morning then the Red Flag Went up, what the F is this going to be, red flag means megga!!!!!

When the Red Flag van arrived we found out it was the islands 3rd Whites Thrush in as many weeks, so we got in the van and found out it had flown off. So we got there spread out and within minutes it was flying over out heads giving amazing views, the language was terrible!!!!  We watched the Thrush dive into the cabbage bed so when everyone arrived the warden flushed the bird a few time so everyone got a good look at it. I managed a couple of record shots. We then left it in peace.

Whilst watching the Whites Thrush we had a Pectoral Sandpiper fly past. Other birds during the day were, our 3rd Bluethroat another 1st Winter Female, which joined the male, he soon saw it off though. More Snow bunt, Lapland Bunting flew over, lots of Blackcaps, Lesser Whitethroats, 3 Crossbill flew over, Gadwall and wigeon lastly a cracking Common Rosefinch showed well for us.

On the Thursday, things were getting quieter, but in the morning we got our 2nd Lapland Bunting flyover, and more Snow bunting.

A Grey Heron was a nice surprise, Common Scoter, Sedge Warbler Lesser Whitethroat, Willow Chiffs, more Bonxie and another Common Rosefinch was on the beach.

Our bird of the day was a Redpoll species which we heard calling as it flew over head i said thats not a Lesser Redpoll, Mike and Derek eventually found the bird in one of the gardens, Tristan suggested a Northwest Redpoll, which is a Greenland type, we all agreed. some of the obs staff turned up and there was some suggestion that it was the rarer lesser on the island. but eventually they came around to our way of thinking, it was far to big for lesser. It assosiated itself with sparrows which were just a bit bigger, so a small Greenland Race it was, Fantastic!!!!

Last day on the island, so we decided to head to the North of the Island for the good views, and Good they were too. We didnt see to much from the north other than a group of Snow buntings.
We then just about made it off the island to shetland where we picked the hire car up and headed straight  for Loch of Tingwall where we had distant views of a Drake Ring-Necked Duck and Slavonion Grebe. Then onto Sumburgh lighthouse where i had very brief flyby views of the Red-breasted Flycatcher that had been present since thursday. We couldnt relocate it after that.

Saturday was home time weather was horrible again so we nipped into Toeb for the reported Little Bunting but crappy birders didnt actually let anyone no where it had been seen, Toeb is a big place, obviously we didnt see it. Of coarse it was reported today but with better directions, although we did look in the area it was reported from.

All in All an excellent holiday, except for this stinking Cold....err Man Flu.

Thanks to Derek West Tristan Reid and Mike Robinson for an excellent trip.

29th September

On Low meadows (Soddy flash) today were 400+ Black-headed Gulls in there were 5 Adult Med Gulls. a Juv Buzzard was present too. No sign of the Scaup or the Mandarin on Soddy Gap.

27th-28th September

Had another weekend Camping with the wife, this time to Filey, hoping the Brown Shrike would turn back upat Flambrough. No such luck! So decided to just try to find my own stuff. So woke up at first light and decided to start at Long Lane where there were a few Goldcrest's then finally a Yellow Browed Warbler flew past calling, then showed pretty well...  Carried on at Filey but there was little else really. They were ringing on site so i went and spent an hour with them, watching them ring Greenfinch, Lesser Redpoll, Dunnocks, and Chaffinch. Got rach up and carried on with family stuff, birding in the prosses. Took a trip to Speeton and the Churchyard which hosted my second YB Warbler and 2 Pied Flycather's.Then to Flambrough Head but little to see here but some Red-throated Divers and a Whinchat.

Woke up several times during the night to hundreds if not thousands of Pinks flying in off the sea, this went on almost all night.

Next day was again spent early morning at Filey YB Warbler was still on Long Lane, but very little else so we made our way home stopping in at Robin Hoods Bay.

Got home and went straight to Soddy gap where i had the Mandarin Duck again and a first for Soddy a 1st Winter Scaup.

24th September

Chris sent me a text saying he had just found a juv Manderine Duck on Soddy Gap a first!!! So that evening i went to have a look at this cracking little bird. Also here were 30 Pinkfeet circling, my first of the season, 59 Teal, 3 Wigeon and a few Snipe.

23rd September

The weeks just get Better and Better, on the 22nd Darren found a juv Stilt Sandpiper at Campfield Marsh a first for Cumbria and only a 2nd ever mainland Juv, 23 records otherwise. So i was out the door by 6am the next morning and by daylight was watching this cracking individual. It was distant but i did manage some record shots.

20th September

Rach and I had planned to go to the North East camping over the weekend, we planned to work North from Newcastle to Holy Island, but things changed as a Greater Sand Plover turned up at Dunbar. This was a lifer for me so we decided to change our plans and go to Dunbar and work South. This turned out perfectly as Saturday afternoon on arriving at dunbar the GS Plover was showing well on the beach. (more pics on the site).

After this we found ourself a brilliant campsite over looking Dunbar harbour and had a lovely walk around to the lighthouse. Nothing much but 1 Curlew Sandpiper, 100+ Golden Plover, Grey Plover and usual Commoner stuff.

The next morning i left rach in bed and to pack up the tent, i then went walk the lighthouse again, checking a few bush's on the way. I then stumbled upon 3 people, 2 blokes and a woman, the woman posing naked for there cameras, very funny and she was well top heavy. So miss mack and cowboy hat you no who you are!!!!

I carried on to an area of scrub which proceded to turn up Garden Warbler, Common Whitethroat, a few Blackcap and after a while a Wryneck. This too gave stuning views if not from cover.

Next stop was Holy Island where i had 2 Swift from the cafe i was sat in, The floods by the farm hosted a Wood Sandpiper and a Curlew Sandpiper. On the Straight loning were a couple of Whinchat and 2 Kestrel. Otherwise there was little else. Last stop was Cresswell where a YB Warbler had been present for a couple of days, no sign though. From the hide 1 Little Stint and Curlew Sandpiper. All in all a great weekend.

18th Septemeber.
A Hoopoe had been found on the sunday the 14th of Sept in Dumfires and Galloway, Carsthorn, the news broke AFTER we got home from the palegic in DnG typical!. So on the Thursday i decided to go after work. What a cracker it was. When i got there i almost walked past it as it was so close to where i parked. it was very showy and i got withing 10 yards of it, any closer and i couldnt focus my scope. Thanks to Pat for letting me no it was still present. Managed to get a few shots.

Sept 13th/14th

Left for Chris and Pats in Dumfries, on the way picking Derek and Tristan up. Looked for the 5 Spoonbills which had bred in the area somewhere, but no sign, although i did string all five which i thought were on a reed bed some distance away, i thought i could see them feeding, but on getting closer they were gone eh! so did i see em, well i dunno now???

Next we picked Chris Baines up and he took us to the area of Luce bay, which was really lovely, with species such as 5 Spotted Redshank, Otter, 4 Little Egret and double figure White Wagtails, also usual commoner stuff.

We then, very kindly stopped over night at Chris and Pats, ready for the palegic organised by Chris and Pete. The birds just wernt out there today, but we did attract 5 Storm Petrels. Nice day but very few birds.

Sept 12th

Decided to have another trip over to the north east picking up Tristan on the way. First stop was Trow Quarry in Durham where we saw a Subalpine Warbler, and a cracking little bird it was too. Unfortunatly it wasnt performing for the cameras today.

Next stop was Cresswell ponds which was fantastic, here we saw 17 diffrent species of waders with brilliant views of Black Tern which i picked up flying over ours heads, it decied to return a few times showing really well, i even managed some digiscope shots.

Also on show was a 2 very close Pectoral Sandpiper's and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper.

There were loads of Curlew Sandpipers on Show too.

All in all a Brilliant day, pitty the light was awful again.

Sept 7th

Tristan and I went over to Newcastle as there had been a large fall of migrants. First stop was Tynemouth and the Priory Park area, where we dipped on Red-Breasted Flycather and Icterine Warbler. We did see Tree pipit, Whinchat, Garden Warblers loads of Pied Fly, Spotted Fly, Wood Warblers and Common Redstart.

One that got away was a possible Red-throated pipit which i got on call Tristan was further up the hill and on phoning him to let him no, he too thought he heard it. Well it did fly over your head Tristan. It was not seen again.... Eventually we caught up with a very elusive Wryneck.

Next stop was Whitley Bay Cemetery, where we had better views of another

Wryneck, more Wood warblers, Redstarts and Pied Fly.

Next it Was the Mound at Newbiggin, where we had brief but cracking views of a MALE Red-Breasted Flycatcher. Tristan managed some good shots, unfortuantly i was off my game today and just wasnt quick enough as well as my camera battery dying at the most inapropriate time. All the pictures i Took today were just rubbish.

Lastly on the Golfcoarse was a cracking Dottrel showing very well. Again things were agaist us as the heavens opened and the light turned to shite!

Did manage a few record shots.

Then to top it off whilst i went to do a sea watch quite litrally, Tristan was still on the Golf coarse where he found another Wryneck..... It was a very difficult day but still all in all a good day was had.

August 2008

29th August

Nice finish to the end of the month with some more good local birding. Picked Tristan and the kids up and first stop was to Silloth. At Silloth were two Mediterranean Gulls an adult was again on the sea front near the tennis courts and a 1st Winter was near the lifeboat station.

Turnstones always show well on hight tide at Silloth, oblivious to all the public.

Next we walked Grune point which was typically quiet with 1 Little Egret, 50+ Bar-tailed Godwit and 11+ Wheatear being the only birds of note on the land. However a single Pomarine Skua and a single Arctic Skua offshore were a nice bonus.

The highlight of our trip to Grune was probably ''Phelps' the Fox' who found himself stranded on the mud on the rising tide, thankfully he made the 15-20 minute swim successfully back onto land on his second attempt!

Common Terns and Sandwich Terns seemed to be everywhere.

At Bowness Railings we met Derek, Darren, Tracy & Ronnie who got us onto another 1st Winter Meditteranian Gull and a Little Gull. Port Carlsile produced another 2 Little Egrets

A juvenile Spotted Redshank, 2 Green Sandpipers and a Ruff were present on the roadside at Campfield scrape along with at least 50 Snipe!, this spot could be very good.

Anthorn was fairly quiet, though I Did located a colour-ringed Golden Plover also 2 juv Ruff and Greenshank were the only other birds of note.

25th August

Tristan and i did a couple of hour sea watch, good strong breeze produced 7 Arctic Skuas, 2 Pom Skuas, 4 Storm Petrels, 325+ Manxies and 7 Fulmar.

23rd August

Had a walk out to Grune point today, first bird's of the day was a dark phase and a light phase Arctic Skua, harrasing all the gulls. Then i Spotted what i thought ws going to be a Yellow Legged Gull, on closer inspection, i could see something was odd about this bird it had the feeling of a Herring Gull will Yellow legs or Hybrid. So i took some pics and got some opinions. It seems this bird was a argentatus yellow legged Herring Gull, very strange bird and shows just how complecated gulls can be....i found out that only 1% of British Argentatus Herring gulls have yellow legs making this a very rare bird in itself, Argentatus are genrally scare in the uk, the majority beingthe race of Argenteus.

There were very few waders and just 7 Wheatear. At Anthorn 5 Juv Ruff.

Early morning i tried Soddy Gap but it was a little quiet. 8 Snipe, Redshank, Common Whitethroat, a family party of Stonechats, small movement of Meadow pipits and a couple of raptors were the only birds of note.

22nd August

The month just gets better, another good find for Darren his second Pacific Golden Plover in Cumbria. So i went to see this bird on the Wednesday but dipped then it wasnt seen for a couple of days, So today i had the day off and took Tristan and his kids to see if we could find it at Anthorn. Initial scan bugger its not here, then on my second scan it stook out a mile, managed to get tristan on to it and rung the news out. This was only my 2nd ever Pacific Golden Plover. Also there were 3 Ruff, and Tristan found 2 Ospreys which flew over our heads flushing all the waders, what a cracking day.

17th August

WOOHOO got a lifer in Cumbria today. Tristan and i did a sea Watch of Workington, we had heard there had been a Balearic off St bees in the morning, so we thought Workington would be worth a look. A 2 Hour Sea watch unbelievably produce my first ever Balearic Shearwater, it looked diffrent from the moment i saw it, so luckily I managed to get Tristan onto the bird as it came closer we could clearly see it was a Balearic Shearwater, i was ecstatic, didnt actually think we would see one really!!!. This bird turned up just as the tide was dropping, which is when a lot of birds are seen, the biggest numbers of manxies turned up at this time too. Other birds were, my first Pom Skua intermediate phase with full spoons from Workington (seen loads of poms just never from Workington) and a Storm Petrel. Also 61 Common Scoter in several small groups. In the 2 hours we were there we saw well over 200 Manx Shearwaters.

Soddy Gap still had 9 Med Gulls, which moved from the pond to the top field. 3 Shoveler were new in and 3 Little Grebe. A Peregrine was a bird i had not seen at Soddy for a few months, this flushed all the gulls.

16th August

Another trip to Soddy Gap, produced 2 Little Grebe, 2 Teal, Buzzard, 2 Sedge Warblers, Cormorant, Raven, Tree Sparrows, a movement of Swifts oh yeh and 21 YES 21 Med Gulls, 10 adults, 6 Juv and 5 2nd Winter. Possibly a County Record.

2 Roe Dear still at low meadows.

8-9 August

Another couple of days at Soddy, no sign of the Gargney, Gadwall was still Present but a Teal was new in. At Soddy Flash (Low Meadows) 2 Roe Deer was a nice surprise, but little else.

Sunday Tristan, Lachlan and i did a VERY short sea watch (20 min) from Workington, loads of Manxies were passing at least 100 in 20 min, (stoped Counting)6 Stormies and the usual suspects when a Black Stork had been relocated very near to Newcastle, this was a lifer for both Tristan, Lachlan and I. We just had to go, relutantly leaving a massive passage of sea birds, im sure there would have been a rare Shearwater passed!!!

We had incredable views of the Black Stork which was showing down to 30 feet.

or is it a vulture!

3rd August

Female Garganey still a Soddy Gap but nothing new in.

2nd August

What a cracking start to the month, decide to do Soddy gap early on the 2nd. When i got there i found the Female Gadwall that chris had seen earlier in the week.

There wasnt much else happening really except a few Sedge Warblers and Willow Warblers singing oh and 3 Raven were flying around. So i was just about to leave when i heard what i though was a Green Sandpiper calling in the distant. A few seconds later 2 Green sandpipers landed on the island Brilliant!

So i watched these feeding for 5 min when 2 Snipe cleared them off!  So i thought i would give it a little longer. This was when i noticed a small duck which i thought was going to be a teal, but it wasnt it was a Female/Juvenile Garganey Wow! It was still there when i left feeding in the margins of the pond. Brillant start to the month.

In the Afternoon whilst Rachel was shopping i did an hours sea watch, this produced 6-10 Stormies. A Dark phase Arctic Skua was chasing Sandwich Terns.

27th July

Well Darren saved the month when he found a Pectoral  Sandpiper at port carlilse, bloody hell i was there the previous day. Dipped on that day but went back a few days later when it was sat with a few Dunlin in port carlisle, as i sat down to photograph it a dog walker came by and flushed it damn damn damn!!!! I then found an adult Curlew Sandpiper, summer plumaged moulting to winter.

A Male Osprey Flew over, also 4 Whimbrel excellent end to a very bad month!.

RUBBISH RUBBISH RUBBISH.

What an appauling month, nothing anywhere, did twitch the Terek Sandpiper over at Saltholme pools in Cleveland but dipped even on this.

Soddy gap hosted nothing except a Common Sandpiper, no water in the flash, so just Pied Wagtails and a juv Shelduck.

Siddick ponds Hosted a family of Pochard, seems they may have breed there,.

An adult Med Gull here too, also an adult seen twice at maryport.

On the 26th visited the solway to find 3 Greenshank, 3 Whimbrel, 8 Common Sandpiper some ,Golden Plover, Dunlin, Knot and 300 odd Redshanks. Appauling!

28th June

Rachel and i had a trip to Lytham St Annes for my first adult summer male Rose-coloured Starling, and brilliant views it was too, luckily in a birders garden coming to fat balls. We then visited the cematary for the resident Ring-necked Parakeets where we had 3 showing really well, if not a bit flighty.

21st June

At Soddy it was nice to see at least 4 or 5 sets of Sedge Warblers had fledged and many Lesser Redpoll flying around. I also found a Drinker Moth Caterpillar.

20th June

Workington hosted 10 Stormies and 2 Manx Shearwaters.

17th June

Quick trip to bass lake after work for Osprey then an hours seawatch of Workington in a strong SE wind produced 3 Storm Petrels and a Pale phase Arctic Skua. Finally the winds are strong enough to producing regular Storm Petrel sightings from now on.

12-15th June

A few days around Cumbria and Lancashire looking for plants all pics here. Including some very rare ones. http://www.freewebs.com/meg33/plants.htm

7th June

Had a Quick Trip to Workington Harbour for an hours seawatch whilst Rachel was Shopping, not surprising there was little movement, a few Kitts, Gannets and a Black Guillemot were only things of note.

Working in Buttermere and Loweswater has been very productive. Birds such as Tree Pipit, Common Redstart, Cuckoo, Wood Warbler and Pied Flycatcher have been Regular. On one occasion a Daubentons bat was feeding on insects over the water in the day on Buttermere.

Thursday and Friday over in the North east had been good for spring migration, so Tristan and i decided to have a trip to North gare on the Saturday, but on arrival it seemed everything had bugged of. We did manage to see a Female Red-backed Shrike, the heat haze was appauling which made photography impossible. Sods law everything turned up on the Sunday, Typical!

The day was saved by some rare plants in teesdale Short-eared Owl and 14 Black Grouse in Cumbria.

Tristan rang on the wednesday to say there was a Lesser Grey Shrike in Northumberland, a lifer for Tristan. He Said he would drive so i agreed to tag a long. When we got to Long nanny it was chucking it down, and i hadnt taken a coat because it was lovely when we left Cumbria. It did finally stop raining when we got to the bird. It was showing really well on the beach feeding off sandhoppers, poor thing was wet through.

Then on the thursday, Tristan rang again saying there was a male Citrine Wagtail at Caerlaverock WWT, we just had to see this, again it was a lifer for Tristan. So i picked Derek and Tristan up and an hour later we were watching a very colourful almost adult male Citrine Wagtail and virtually had the bird to ourselfs. What a cracking couple of days.

NORFOLK MAY 2008

Posted by meg33 at 04:58 PM on May 29, 2008 Comments comments (0)

Well started my holiday on the friday at Myerscough College. I did my first test for my Chemical spraying certificate, ended up with 88% not bad for my first test in years.

Next stop was for the long staying Glossy ibis close by, and what an amazing bird it was now as it had attained its summer plumage.

Next stop was Chesire for the now breeding Black-winged stilt, they showed much better this week actually coming out into the open.

Right got to norfolk on the Saturday and what a day it was too, was this the start to a brilliant birding couple of weeks.

Highlights of the day were Cattle Egret at Burnham Norton, although distant, I just couldnt be bothed to walk to get closer, it was far to warm. 22 Little Gulls a Black Tern, Wood Sandpipers and 4+ Grey headed wagtails of the race thunbergi.

Little Ringed plovers, Hobby, Garganey, Baikal Teal (although probably an escape), Yellow Wagtail and 2 Red-creasted Pochards all on the first day wow.

But yes this was to be the best day all holiday. After a promising start it slowed down drastically.

Sunday i spent the morning on the campsite for Woodlark, Lesser Whitethroat, Female Ring Ouzel and a site i new for Dartford Warbler.

Then on to Titchwell for 7 Dottrel, Bearded Tit and Bittern. News Broke of a Great Reed Warbler, so we had to go. The afternoon was spent at Lakenheath waiting for the Great Reed Warbler, so i waited and waited and waited, nothing, so i had a look for the Golden Oriols none, oh dear. so off to Weeting heath for the Stone Curlew, luckily we did see these but only because the warden was out on the reserve which flushed the birds, good flight views and ground views obtained.

Started heading back to the camp, when news broke of the GRW again so back we went to Lakenheath, again i waited and waited, and yes ah that was it brief flight views back into cover, tut rubbish. There was a couple of Gargney to take my mind of the wait.

Next day we had 3 Temminicks, Greenshank, Little Tern, Corn Bunting amd Turtle Dove.

At this point it went really quiet for the rest of the week. It did take 3 attempts to see a very ellusive Hoopoe on a long walk around Burnham Overy Staithe. I did get good views of a female Whinchat, and a male Ring Ouzel whilst looking for the Hoopoe.

I did get great views of a male Montys Harrier earlier in the day.

The rest of the week was spent doing allsorts, relaxed birding and family stuff.

A Breeding plumage Spoonbill was at Holkham.

Wood sandpipers were everywhere, so too were Temmincks stints.

Common Cranes seemed everywhere too, at Horsey a group of eight and 3 at Pensthorpe, in the wild side of the reserve.

Crossbills were at Holkham Park and Kelling heath.

More Woodlarks on the Camp Site.

Finally the end of the Week produced some amazing views of a Male and Female, Red Footed Falcon at Lakenheath.

Also great views of Common Crane 2 Bitterns  and brief views of Golden Oriol finally, there must have been 4 males singing in the are though.

Second week produced very little, best thing was better views of a Great Reed Warbler at Cley and another Bittern.

Then Finally i found something. I had a lye in bed one morning, been up at five most mornings. Lying in bed i heard a Firecrest outside the van, i jumped out of bed and watched 2 males singing and one displaying to a female, great . On a walk around the site a couple of days later, john miller found another singing male and i found a fouth singing male, great. Kelling is a big site there could be more.

Although i had a bad couple of weeks for Rarities i still mangaged a total of 164 species, a record for me i think.

All in all another successfull year.

May 2008
5th May

Another days birding this time with Tristan and Mike. Mike drove us to Paxton Pits in Camb. We had amazing views of Nightingale, We must have saw at least 10 birds singing.

We heard but didnt see Turtle dove, We also had Lesser Whitethroat, Common Whitethroat and my first Cuckoo of the year.

We then went to Fen Drayton NR for Temmicks Stint, we had to wait a little but it did finally appear from behind the island giving good scope views.

We had more views of Cuckoo and mike and I manged to here Cettis Warbler. We couldnt find the Gargney that had been reported that morning.

On the way home we stopped at Neummans Flash for cracking views of the breeding Black-Winged Stilts, we also saw a nest changeover.

Thanks for Driving all that way Mike.

4th May

I picked Tristan up and decided we would have a day at Leighton Moss in Lancashire. We started at Silverdale for some Orchids. Early Purple and Green Veined Orchid.

Then we had a look from the Eric Morcambe hide where we had better views of the Spoonbill.

Also from this hide was a cracking 2nd Summer Med gull.

It then came on the pagers that a Black Tern was at the public hide, when we got there it was showing distantly but then moved onto the hide behind the visitor centre where it gave good Scope views.

We also had good views of Marsh Harrier.

2nd May

Where do i start, well at Low meadows, i had my first Garden Warblers (2) for the site and the Year. At Soddy gap 30 Whimbrel, 2 Grashopper Warblers and 4 Sedge Warbler.

Then i decided to have a bit of a sea watch at Bowness Viaduct, on arrival phil was there and after 5 min we picked up a pale phase Pom Skua. After a littel while i Picked up a Black Tern, typical i needent of rushed for the one at Longtown yesterday!. Nothing much else to report. I drove past north plain with the window open and heard 5 Lesser Whitethroats singing between north plain and the Gate.

Then to Workington, nothing much but 6 Sandwich Terns, 2 Common Scoter, 2 Gannet and Kittiwakes. Then Siddick ponds where i heard and saw yet another Lesser Whitethroat, and 2 Reed Warblers. Finishing up at Soddy Gap and Low meadows again but nothing new in.

May 1st

Tristan rang to say there was a Black Tern at Longtown ponds, so i thought i better go and have a look, very scarce in Cumbria. Cracking Views of a Summer plumaged bird.

At work in Ennerdale, Peregrine with food, Ring Ouzel Singing. After work i had a trip to Green wood near Loweswater where i had good views of Red Squirrel, Redstart and Nuthatch.

27th April 2008

The dog woke me up at 530am, so by 6am i was at St Bees in the thick fog, this wasnt looking good. Throught the mist i did see 5 Common Whitethroat and many Willow Warblers. A Whimbrel was calling from the fog, it then landed just in front of me. Still there seemed little about. I started heading back towards the car when i heard a Ring Ouzel from the fog. After a while the fog cleared for 15 minuites, in this time i had excellent views of the Whitethroats, Willow Warblers plenty of Wheatears probably Greenland Race and a cracking Male Ring Ouzel.

On the way home i nipped into soddy gap, where my first Grasshopper Warblers(3) and Sedge Warblers(2) had finally arrived and were happily singing away. 2 Common Sandpiper were now present. The 4 Pinkfeet were still present and the 2 Redshank had moved to Soddy  gap from Low meadows so there were just 6 Teal and a Wheatear there.

This afternoon, had a walk around Dearham and a Street called The went produced some surprising results, 1 Lesser Whitethroat which i dont see very oftern in Cumbria, never mind just down the road from my house. 4 Whimbrel flew over, 4 Wheatear in ploughed fields, Blackcap and Great spotted Woodpecker. Billiant end to my day and its only 3pm.

26th April 2008

Reached 200 species today. Tristan, Lachlan and i met Roy at the services, we started our days birding at Sizergh castle for the Hawfinch's again. What cracking views we had of a male and a female.

Next onto Lytham St Annes for the Ross's Gull, there was no sign so we went to the cemetary to try to find the Ring-necked Parakeets, we didnt see any but we heard one calling, thats good enough for me. Then the Ross's Gull was reported from Grannys bay. When we got there it was much further away, but was still good value. Whilst watching the Gull we also had 2 Whimbrel, Arctic Tern and Common Tern, nice year ticks.

We then had a look at Warton bank for the Glossy Ibis but dipped on him today, there were 3 Little Egret and a Peregrine. On the way home i saw my first Swift of the year.

We decided to finish of at Leighton moss where we saw a Green Winged Teal, Spoonbill and an Adult Med Gull, also really close views of a Common Sandpiper, Peregrine and over 300 Black-tailed Godwit.

21st-25th April 2008

At Low meadows was my first red squirrel, Hare, 2 Redshank still there, 150 Lesser BB Gulls, 2 Shelduck and 40 Herring gulls.

Soddy gap 96 Golden Plover, 4 Pinkfeet and the Common Sand still.

20th April 2008

Soddy gap hosted movements of Wheatear's 30+ in 45 min.

96 Summer Golden Plovers

4 Pinkfeet STILL, 2 Redshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, Chiffchaff's, Willow Warbler's, Tree Sparrow's, and the usual stuff.

19th April

Ross's Gull had been reported on and off all week, so i asked the wife if she fancied a trip to Blackpool (which pi**ed Tristan off, sorry mate). So we left fairly early and decided to stop of at Sizergh Castle for Hawfinch, on arrival there was no sign so i had a walk around, seeing Marsh tit, Bullfinch, Heron and usual stuff. On returning to the car park i saw 1 Hawfinch land in one of the trees. I got another visiting birder onto it. A few more people turned up and so did a few more Hawfinch 6 in the end. They gave Stunning views both in the trees and on the ground, although very flighty.

We waited for news of the Ross's Gull until dinner, but nothing, so we decided to have a look anyway. On arrival i had a look from the windmill, where i saw a White Winged Gull very distantly, but didnt have time before it disapeared to decide what it was. There was an Iceland gull reported later.

Next stop was dinner in the car at Fairhaven Lake, nobody had seen the bird at all. This didnt look good. We drove a little further north got some cash out for an ice cream and started heading back toward fairhaven lake, but i decided to stop and check the beach's on the way back, first beach nothing but donkeys, then onto the second beach car-park, i walked onto the beach and there it bloody was sat in a pool on the beach, so i legged it back to the car to get my scope, and some pics. I put the news out and withing minutes there were 30 or so birds there happily watching It at very close quaters. I later found out that someone had been watching it for an hour, but couldnt put out the news because he had no credit on his phone, typical. I cant dowload the pics for some reason so heres the link to a few.

http://www.freewebs.com/shrike33/rosssgull.htm

2 lifers in the space of a few days, brilliant.

17th April.

Off to Newcastle and Swallow ponds where a Pallas's Warbler had been reported. I finally found my first ever Pallas's Warbler in the woods near to the screen hide. It was Singing merrily from the trees sounding very much like a Willow Warbler. This gave stunning views eventually down to 10 feet. Also there were, Drake Ruddy Duck, Yellow Wagtail, and Blackcap. Then i went to see Black-necked Grebes at a secret site i knew, it was nice to see 6 birds displaying.

On the way home i nipped into Low Meadows, where there were 2 Redshank.

15th April.

Very last week working in Juggar howe in North Yorkshire. highlights were Marsh Tit in Juggar howe. Tundra Bean Goose, European White-fronted Goose, Pinkfeet and Greylag at Scaling Damns.

13th April

Got back from Chesterfield fairly early so visited Low Meadows, where there were 2 Willow Warbler and 2 Chiffchaff Singing. After dinner we had a walk down the prom at Maryport, i was surprised to find 2 White Wagtail near the old paddling pool in the millenium garden, also 4 Swallow near the fort. Very little else of note though.

12th April

Trip to Chesterfield to visit sick in-laws. So i made a quick visit to Cromford Canal for Hawfinch on arrival to the rugby pitch, there was one showing brilliantly well, by the time i had got my camera set up it had gone.(Typical) Also there, were my first Blackcap of the year, male and female together.

Then to Carsington water where i had 4 White Wagtail and a Great-northern Diver coming into summer plumage.

Loads of Willow Warbler and Chiffchaff, Swallows into double figures loads of Sand Martins (hundreds)and 1 House Martin. Then i saw 2 Little Owl courting.

4th April

Not done much birding lateley, just walks with the wife and dog, last week i had my first Wheatear (5) at st bees along with a couple of Ravens. There were more Wheatears (3) on the beach at Maryport.

At Low Meadow (Soddy Flash) i had my first Ringed Plover for the site.

Today i had a Redshank, Chiffchaff, Wheatear and Bullfinch all at Low Meadows (Soddy flash) and 4 Pinkfooted geese at Soddy Gap.

Then onto Siddick ponds, when i arrived there were at least 20 Sandmartins circling the car  park and to my Surprise a single Swallow.I walked the old railway to Seaton which i had never done before. What a nice walk it was too. 18 Chiffchaff, 1 Willow warbler again first of the year and 8 Wheatear.

Spring Has arrived.

28th March

Went back AGAIN for the Ring-necked Duck at Bass lake, where the bird was showing  very well outside the hide, i was able to get some much better pictures.

My first Chiffchaff was singing in Powter howe wood.

Norfolk trip 20th-23rd March
Monday, Mar 24, 2008

Well a somewhat different Norfolk trip (in the Tent) weather wise, Rain, Wind, Sleet and Snow, it was a bloody awful first couple of days, I did look for the Great Grey Shrike at Kelling but it was a complete waste of time, i didnt see one bird, it was just too windy and wet, what was i doing out here. Ok so i went to see the geese at Martham Ferry, hoping it would stop raining, i did eventually get Ross's and Snow Goose in the pooring rain. Quick hot chocolate at horsey pump and to our surprise there were 2 Common Cranes in the nearby fields, (great).

The next stop was Gorleston for the very pale Juv Glaucous Gull, it was showing very well again in the pooring rain, i got soaked. Turned out to be quite a succesful day in the end.

Saturday was much the same, so we went to Titchwell, where i had a first winter Med Gull

8 Brambling, Black Brent and Spotted Redshank, then family stuff. I also tried for Shorelark, but the weather beat me.

Sunday was a much better day, Shorelark was first on the agenda, cracking views but still a little windy for brilliant photos.

Cley produced very little, family stuff then Shag at Wells Harbour.

Finished of birding at Titchwell again, 4 Bramblings, Black Brant, Spotted Redshank, 2 Adult Med Gulls and lots of Ruff.

I did look for the White Crowned Sparrow a couple of times but seeing as they were no longer feedeing the birds it was a case of wasted time.

All in all a succesfull trip despite the weather.

20th March

Visited Sandsend again where the 11 Lapland Buntings were still Present

15th-16th March.

Brilliant weekend on the Saturday Tristan, Chris and I visited Ireland where Derek Charles took us on the adventure of a lifetime, pitty we didnt see much! No really we did get 1 Manxie from the boat with the usual sea birds, brilliant views of Barrows goldeneye and distant views of a Female Lesser Scaup. Bogey bird still was Ring-billed Gulls no sign, but on the sunday (when i wasnt there Derek found 3, TYPICAL). There had been a Fosters Tern for a while but this we dipped too. 3 Wintering Sandwich terns was a nice surprise and good numbers of Pale-bellied Brents. Thanks Derek!

On The Sunday, what an incredible day which made up for the dips of the day before tristan an I went to soulseat loch for cracking views of the male Lesser Scaup. If that wasnt good enough we found a very good contender for a 4th ever Pacific Diver on Loch ryan. I picked up what i though was a Black-throated Diver distantly got Tristan onto it and at the same time took my eye of it. Tristan couldnt decide what diver species it was and suggested Pacific (good Call Tristan), i found the bird again, neither of us could see a flank patch, the bill was tilted up slightly very similar to red-throated diver but not as strongly tilted, sat higher on the water and although there was nothing to compare it too we did feel it was slightly smaller than a BT Diver. Tristan then saw the dark marking on the under tail. We then went around the wigg for better views but could not relocate it. Later in The day Chris Baines relocated the bird along side a Black-throated diver which he suggested was slightly bigger. Lets hope its relocated and confirmed soon!!!!!

12th March

Went to Sandsend in North Yorkshire after work and found 11 Lapland Buntings (great).

1 Green Woodpecker, Shag, Red-throated diver and commoner stuff.

9th March
Quick Dip of the Ross's Goose AGAIN. But Greenland Whitefronted Goose was nice.

8th March

I picked Derek Tristan and Lachlan upfrom Wigton, then to Gretna to pick up Chris (full car this week). First stop was Loch Maben where we had a Red-headed Smew.
Then  to Strathclyde Country park to hopefully see the Ring-billed Gull which had been seen alllll week. Spent all day there and no bloody sign, this is a bogey bird for me it still a lifer. A Nodic Jackdaw and a couple of Hooded x Carrion Crows were a nice surprise.
We did find a putitive 3rd Winter Caspian Gull or is it a Herring gull, comments welcome. Then later in the gull roost i picked up a first winter Yellow legged gull, but no white winged gulls, although a day later there were 4, Typical!!! Oh a male Smew was a cracking bird on the river. This is a great spot for the gulls though.

2nd March
A Trip to Dumfries and Galloway and Torrs Warren produced usual woodland species but no Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. Then quick look for any Geese but nothing.
Then to Stranraer and Bishop Burn for a gull feast picking up 1st Winter Iceland Gull, and 2nd Winter Kumliens Gull.

A Dark Argentatus Herring Gull there were a few Argentatus herring gulls when you looked closely. An Adult Med Gull was also the pick of the Gulls.

Then to Loch Ryan where we saw Great-northern Diver, Black-throated Diver, and Red-throated Diver. 10 Slavonion Grebes, 4 Long-tailed Duck, several Black Guillemots and usual stuff. On the way home i thought i had a Hooded crow so on returning to the bird it turned out to be 2 Hooded x Carrion Crows, nice all the same.

1st March
A trip to Grangemouth for the Spotted Sandpiper with the wife. Which i saw pretty quickly before it flew up stream pretty quickly. Searched the area for other things but nothing of any real note. Then to Falkirk to see the Falkirk Wheel.
On the way back we stopped at Loch Maben where we saw a Long-tailed Duck.

20th-23rd February

Morning in Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay produced 4 Purple sandpiper, but very little else.

In Cumbria i had a day looking for Geese at Abbeytown, a Greenland Whitefront was a nice surprise and 8 Twite at bowness railings was a nice year tick.

An hours sea watching produced a Great Skua nice year tick, 32 Purple sandpipers a Fulmar, Gannet, Porpoise(s) and the usual suspects.

16th-17th February.

Very nice relaxing weekend. At Easton I decided to go and see the Ross's Goose that had been there all week, but typically it disapeared that day. It wasnt the end of the world though as the Red-breasted Goose reapeared instead, in Easton!!! Excellent.

On the Sunday i had a walk with the wife along the promenade at Maryport. 105 Knot, 8 Red-breasted Merganser and 4 Bottlenosed Dolphin suning themselfs in the water were the mornings highlights. Then Tristan rang to inform me of a Cattle Egret in Carlisle. This gave stunning views.

Norfolk Trip 8th-10th February
Thursday, Feb 14, 2008

What a fun packed weekend, with what was nearly a disaster too.

Tristan and I got to Mikes on the Thursday night about 7pm, by 1030pm we were in the Travel lodge in Long Sutton. (Nice driving Mike). Early Friday morning the boys had there brecky, then we were off, first stop was for Golden Pheasent at Wolfroton Triangle, which Mike and I connected with very brief views of a Male and a Female. Next Stop was our Main event the White-crowned Sparrow at Cley. It hadnt been seen as yet, but on arrival we were able to pick it up fairly quickly, but photographs were difficult as it wouldnt stay still too long.

After a couple of hours, Mike and I decided to nip to Salthouse for the Snow Buntings and hopefully Lapland Bunting, leaving Tristan to try and get some decent photos off the Sparrow. On Arriving at Salthouse we were privie to a magnificant spectical of at least 60 Snow Buntings, i hadnt realised just how big these birds are.

Someone then pointed out a Lapland Bunting, although looking at my pics i think there were 2 birds, brilliant all target birds seen so far.

Next stop for Mike and I was a site i knew would garantee us Dartford Warbler, and lo and behold there was a male and female, although too brief.

We then picked Tristan up on our way to Holkham where we spotted a few Dark-belled Brent Geese, with one Black Brant, another target species of ours.

Holkham Monument was our next stop for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, it was getting slightly late, so we wern't surprised when we couldnt find any. Quick look at the map we umed and ared, could we get to Norwich and Wacton for the reported Dark-breasted Barn Owl, Ok lets give it ago. We got there about five, missing the bird by about 30 min. We did get nice views of a nominate Barn Owl, not to worry we would try again in the morning, (or would we).

We decide to head to Norwich and our second Travel lodge off the trip. DISASTER the car started to brake down, we just managed to roll up outside our Travel Lodge (lucky or what!) where the AA took the car to the nearest garage.

By 11am the next day the car was fixed. We gave the Owl the miss as Mike wanted to see Common Crane so we drove all around the Horsey area with no luck. Next stop was Cantley for the Bean Geese which seem to have disapeared although we did see good numbers of European White-fronted Geese. In the same area was Green Sandpiper, Female Scaup and 3 Water Pipit all nice year ticks. We then finished our day back at Wacton Common where we had brilliant and prolonged views of the Dark-breasted Barn Owl, Nominate Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl. Fantastic finish to the Day. Back to the Travel lodge.

Last Day turned out to be as good as the first. Although we missed Golden Pheasent at Wayling wood, but plenty of Marsh Tits. We found ourselfs at Thetford missing Goshawk due to the massive amout of distubance by a bike race. We did get nice views of a singing Woodlark however. Then Mike told us of a well known Smew site which i cant remember the name off, Mike thought he had a glimps of a Redhead, but bird of the day so far was a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, which is a species Tristan and myself hadnt seen for a few years, and was on top of our trip list.

Brief Trip to Ely for yes Muscovy Duck and Small Race Canada. (Oh the Shame). Pending cat C

.

Welney was our next stop, Bewick Swan was a priority for me and luckily we got a group of 8 on the main road to Walney.

At Welney we got the 3 Tundra Bean Geese, Merlin, Whooper swans and usual other stuff, missing the Common Crane.

Back to North Norfolk, where a Rough Legged Buzzard had been pinned down at Burnham Norton, cracking Scope views, we picked up a Ring-tailed Hen Harrier too.

Then came a report of a Great Grey Shrike at Kelling Heath, my favorite site. On arriving,i thought i knew where i was going, but the pager messages were all wrong, but luckily we found some birders and they told us the way. Within minuites we were watching a cracking 1st Winter Great Grey Shrike.

Last stop was Cley for Avocet, Ruff and the usual contenders, what a cracking end to a cracking weekend.

109 Bou Species logged over the weekend.

2nd February

Had an excellent day in  Lancashire/Burnley area with Derek oh yeh Tristan came along too.

Started off in Cumbria looking for Hawfinch at Sizergh Castle , but no sign of any today, this made me think this day is gonna be a day of dips, Luckily that wasnt to be, We got to Burnley for the Waxwings, and after a couple of detors and some valuable directions from a kind women, we saw 2 on Oxford st. After an hour of fantastic views and a few photos they flew off.

Next stop was Barrow for the Slavonion grebe and some lunch. Again this gave fantastic views but on arrival took some seeing due to it diving continuosly.

Next stop was Padiham where a week ago a Great Grey Shrike had been reported, i thought this would be a difficult bird to see (I thought it had probably gone no reports all week). We walked up to and past the area it had been seen in but no sign, so we started walking back to the car, at which point i saw a grey blob in the middle of a hegde a couple of huindred yards away, was it rubbish, No! it was the Great Grey shrike pheww. What a good day this was turning out to be.

Last stop Warton Bank near Preston for the long staying Glossy Ibis. Once there again there was no sign, but after about 10 min Eagle eye Derek spotted it coming out of a ditch quite distant, Tristan had walked off, so i gave him a ring to get here quick, but then it flew off and out of site. Luckily it only took a few minuies for Tristan to see it as it took flight again and disapered back onto the marsh. What great end to the day. BRILLIANT!!!

January 26th and 27th

Salterbeck hosted 2 Med Gulls and a drake Goosander. Flimby Rugby pitch 2 Med Gulls, Mandarin duck still on river.

Off to Bass lake to hopefully see the 2 Slavonion Grebes, but to no avail, so off to Linksfiled tarn where there was a Jack Snipe reported, luckily there it was sat out in the open giving good scope views.

January 20th

Same old Sh*t really, off to Workington for more Med Gulls, Nordic Jackdaw and Mandarin Duck all Still present. Oh Yes and a cracking Drake Red-breasted Merganser. And RN Duck Stilll on Bass lake.

January 13th

Tristan and Brian Unexpectedly turned up at my door, so i thought i better go out then and show them some birds. First they wanted to see Med gull, Flimby nothing, Siddick ponds nothing, Workington None and salterbeck None where had they all gone, i had six on Friday?

So next was the Mandarin Duck i found a couple of days earlier, i had been told it was on the river yesterday. So off we went, yes! there it was in full view, everyone seemed happy. Bit of breakfast at Tescos, then off to salterbeck. Looking throught the Gulls again there was nothing, then Tristan said "isnt that a........." i said yes a Nordic type Jackdaw, id seen a bird much brighter than this a couple of years ago in the same area. So we may have missed the Med gulls but Nordic Jackdaw sure made up for it. I seem to be on a role at the moment.

January 12th

Just a quick trip to Siddick Ponds tonight for Bittern, just the one seen very breifly, but good views of Barn Owl, Sparrowhawk and I heard a few Water-rail.

January11th

Had a full days birding started of at Salterbeck reservor where there were three Med Gulls 2 adults and a 1st winter. Then to Beckermet to see if the reported GW Egret was present, but no sign. A walk up the river produced 2 Dipper. Then to Parton where there were 4 Purple Sandpipers and 2 Med gulls an adult and a 1st winter. Workington harbour produced nothing, and then to Siddick ponds which produced an adult Med Gull (think it was the same as 1 of the Salterbeck birds) and a Cracking Drake Manderine duck, scarce in Cumbria. Finally finished at Soddy Gap which produced 8 Goosander and cracking views of a hunting Barn Owl.

January 5th

Trip to Grangemouth produced my first lifer of the year, Spotted Sandpiper, weather was very poor so no decent photos, F*****g Weather. This bird is just starting to get its spots.

January 1st and 2nd

78 Species

Nice start to the year, Went back to cardoness for the Cattle Egret, Red Kite at Loch ken, RN Duck at Bass lake and Grey Partridge at soddy gap.

31st December

Last day of the year Female RN Duck still there still to far away for photos.

Up to Whinlatter Forest where i saw at least 12 Common Crossbill and a good contender for a Parrot Crossbill. Whilst i was photographing the Common Crossbill i came across a larger Crossbill, but before i could grill the bird i took 3 photos and it flew off, shit! In the end It was seen as a 1cy male Common Crossbill, so you live and you learn!

Anyway heres the a couple of pics that turned out.

30th December

Just when i thought this month was over, i found a Female Ring-necked duck on Bassenthwaite lake. Miles away so apologies for the poor photo, i think you can see what it is.

Also today 5 Brambling and small movements of Pinkfeet, total 920

29th December

Brilliant end to the month, tristan his son and i visited Dumfiries for great views of Cattle Egret, at one point it landed on the side of the road and decided to walk accros the road dodging the traffic.

16th December

Had a great day today Green-winged teal at siddick ponds. Also Shoveler x Blue-winged Teal.

Then after the second time of asking i finally saw the Red-breasted Goose on Newton Marsh, along with 5000 Barnacle geese and a white barnacle, 122 Whooper swans and 70 Twite.

Soddy Gap hosted my first Gadwall for the site, with 4 Goosanders 25 Wigeon and a load of Teal.

Well last month of the year, not going to reach that magical 300 mark, oh well maybe next year.

Good start to the month went back for the Desert  Wheatear near Scarbrough and managed some record shots this time.

Also managed a very confiding (although too close for decent photos) Black-Throated diver in Scarbrough harbour and 1 Little Auk flying North. At work Peregrine, and 2 Woodcock .
